People usually arrive at their first whisky class in San Jose a little braced for it. They expect a lecture, a quiz, or a room full of people who already know what a spirit cut is and will notice that they do not.

That is not what happens. Ten minutes in, somebody always says the second pour smells like a Band-Aid, everyone laughs, and we spend the next five minutes on why that is actually the correct answer.

If you have been searching for whisky classes San Jose has three genuinely different options, and they are not interchangeable. Here is what each one looks like, what it costs, and what you do not need to bring.

Whisky Classes San Jose: Three Ways to Learn

They are not the same thing, and which one suits you depends mostly on whether you want a one-off evening or something ongoing.

The Monthly Whisky Study Group

Of the whisky classes San Jose locals ask us about most, this is the one, and it is the closest thing we run to a real course.

It meets on the third Wednesday of every month at 6:00 PM over Zoom. Samples are shipped to you ahead of the session, or you can collect them in person in San Jose or San Francisco if you would rather not wait on a courier.

Each month the group works to an $1,800 budget for six bottles. That number is the whole point. It buys allocated releases that sell out in minutes, independent bottlings, and the occasional bottle nobody in their right mind would buy whole on a hunch. You taste it for the price of a sample instead.

Sessions usually follow a theme, a region, a cask type, a style. Some months the theme is just DGW, which stands for Darn Good Whisky and means exactly what you think.

At the end of each session every member gets a random shot at buying the remainder of any bottle on the table. That is the part people stay for. Walking away with a full bottle of something genuinely rare, for the price it actually cost, happens more often than you would expect.

Private and corporate classes, in person

If you want whisky classes San Jose businesses and families book for a specific group, a birthday, a team, a client dinner, this is the one.

A session runs 60 to 90 minutes for anywhere between 5 and 100 people, anywhere around San Jose and the wider Bay Area. We bring a flight of five to ten whiskies and an educator who sits at the table rather than standing at a lectern.

The flight is built for the room. A group of first-timers gets a different line-up than a group of collectors, and we ask before we pour. Full details on private tastings and corporate events, or if your people are scattered across the country there is a virtual version with kits shipped to every desk.

Learning at home, at your own pace

Not everyone wants a scheduled evening. Two of the whisky classes San Jose customers buy most work entirely on your own clock.

Our Whiskey Tasting Kits start at $65 and are put together by the same educators who run the classes. The pours are chosen to sit against each other so the differences are obvious, which is the only way tasting notes ever stop being abstract.

The A-Z Series at $100 is the stranger project. We are working through all 160 Scottish distilleries active since the Second World War, including ones that have been closed for decades. Each set is sourced on the same $1,800 budget, from auctions, distilleries and private collections.

What actually happens in a session

The whisky classes San Jose residents join all follow roughly the same shape, in person or over Zoom.

  1. How to nose it. Mouth open, glass at the chin, no deep sniffs. Most people have been doing this wrong their whole lives and the fix takes thirty seconds.
  2. The first pour. Usually something gentle. We talk about what you are smelling before anybody drinks anything.
  3. Working through the flight. Each pour gets its story. Where it came from, what the distillery does differently, why it tastes the way it does.
  4. Water. A few drops, then taste again. The change surprises people every single time.
  5. Questions. Whatever the room wants. Nobody is kept to a script.

What you will actually learn

Less trivia than you might expect. Mostly it is the handful of things that let you read a bottle you have never seen before and make a decent guess at what is inside.

Why Scotch tastes different from bourbon, for instance, comes down to two rules. The Scotch Whisky Regulations 2009 require three years in oak casks under 700 liters, and in practice almost all of those casks are secondhand. American rules in 27 CFR 5.143 require bourbon to go into new charred oak. Fresh wood, fast flavor, all that vanilla and caramel.

One rule difference, two completely different drinks. That is the kind of thing that sticks.

If you want to read ahead, the Whisky Tasting Guide for Beginners covers the basics, and the seven types of whiskey explains how the categories fit together.

What you do not need

  • Any prior knowledge. Sessions are built for complete beginners and collectors in the same room, and that works better than it sounds.
  • Special glassware. Provided in person, included in the kits.
  • A big budget. A $65 kit is a real starting point, not a stripped-down one.
  • A high tolerance. These are samples, not doubles. Spitting is entirely normal and nobody will comment.

You do need to be 21 or over. That one is not negotiable.

Where we are, and where we come to you

The whisky classes San Jose hosts all run out of the Whiskey Education Foundation, based at 168 Park Bolton Pl, San Jose, CA 95136. Private and corporate sessions are mobile, so we come to your home, office or venue anywhere around San Jose and the San Francisco Bay Area.

The Study Group runs on Zoom, which means you can join from anywhere in the country. Local members often collect their samples in person instead of waiting for shipping.

Whisky Classes San Jose: Common Questions

Do I need any experience?

No. Most people at any given session are there for the first time. The educator starts with how to nose a glass properly, which is the only technique that really matters at the beginning.

How much do whisky classes San Jose charge?

The Monthly Study Group starts at $140 and includes six rare samples shipped to you. Tasting kits start at $65. Private and corporate sessions are quoted by group size and format, so it is worth telling us the headcount and the occasion first.

How long does a session last?

Private and corporate tastings run 60 to 90 minutes. The Study Group tends to run a little longer, partly because of the questions and partly because nobody is in a hurry to log off.

Can I book a class for a group?

Yes, from 5 to 100 people. Birthdays, team events, client dinners and conferences all work. Optional food pairings and branded elements are available for corporate bookings.

Is there anything for people outside the Bay Area?

The Study Group and the virtual tastings both work anywhere in the United States, with kits shipped to each participant.

What is the difference between a class and a tasting event?

A class is built around teaching, with an educator working through why each pour tastes the way it does. An event is more social. If you are looking for the latter, we keep a list of whisky tasting events in San Jose instead.

Booking one

For the ongoing option, the Monthly Whisky Study Group takes bookings month by month, so you are never locked into anything.

For a group anywhere around the Bay Area, tell us the date and headcount and we will come back with a flight and a quote. If you would rather just start tasting tonight, a tasting kit does the job.

Questions first is completely fine. Get in touch and ask.
